HOLLAND 1 - Garten van der Wal

Garten Wim van der Wal - Zennewijnen bei Ophemert - Holland
Visit to the dutch garden of Mr. Wim van der Wal - Zennewijnen / Ophemert - Holland

The garden van der Wal was created at a wonderful place with very good soil of loamy river earth.

The house and the garden are between the both arms of the Rhein Niederrhein and Waal rivers.
The front garden has only one kind of roses, which is typical for the style of an English Rose Garden.
Suddenly I get a first glimpse into a spacious park.
I see only a few - but good - sculptures in the garden.
Another style of garden is presented on the south side.

This part of the garden reminds me of baroque French gardens.
But now I' ll show you the wonderful, sweeping parc.

Mr. van der Wal has done a good job. He is a garden architect.

It is good to look back for a moment from the spacious green to the beautiful house.

The mixed borders are very harmonious in colour and form.

Die Teichanlage ist genauso großzügig wie der Rasen bemessen und zieht sich durch gut ein Drittel der Parklänge.
The pond ist very long and narrow.

At all places you can find trees, old roses and perennial herbs in good combinations.

This garden with 10.000 qm and more than 600 of various perennial herbs opened my garden tour through the Netherlands in 2004. At the end of the presentation of my visits in Netherlands, I believe that you will be surpriced about the quality and the great variety of Dutch gardens.

Umzug ins Winterquartier

Every Summer I put my indoor plants outside in the garden, at the left and the right side of the terrace.
At the moment they are outside, but they must come back very soon in the winter garden.
At first I put all plants from inside in the garden to the other inside plants.

I'm obsessive about cleaning, but the winter garden must be very clean.

I look how many place the plants need.

Then I check for snails and lice.

Plants which are blooming now or in Winter receive now a new plant earth and a little hen's dung.

After the big pots I look for the little pots and begin with the family of Orchids.
These pictures show you , how empty the winter garden is in Summer.

Citrus, Orchids or Camellias need all a very special potting earth for growing.

The little fountain must be cleaned as well.

Succulents receive little pot saucers, the others present themselves in planters.

But the Orchids and Tillandsias don't receive a planter or a pot saucer. Mostly they hang at a piece of a bark.

And finally I look for a good place for all the plants. Plants which need a lot of sun like Hibiscus and Strelitzia I put near the windows and the half shady plants like Begonias, Bromelias and Orchids I put near the side of the house or under the balcony.

And now, the winter garden is crowded and I can see a lot of Orchids with many buds, I hope they will bloom very soon. I'll tell you later about it.

Zu Besuch bei Gartenfreunden

Today I' m going to show you a wonderful, abundant garden near me.

Under a green "heaven" we go to the front door.

I love this forest-like atmosphere. When I come around the corner of the house I am in a very idyllic shady garden.
But at first we say hello to my friends, go into the house and then to the terrace.

There are the potted plants .

Here we can spot the Water Garden, it is easily viewed from the terrace.

In Summer, but also in Winter, the water bounds over the stone into the pond.

I think this part of the garden is very meditative.

Some plants are wearing a lovely Autumn dress and we can imagine, what colours are waiting for us in the biggest part of the garden, in the Shade Garden.

In the Shade Garden, I prefer a visit in Autumn. In the Water Garden I love May and June with the blooming azaleas.

Here Hosta and Box-trees are changing, and when the Hostas are killed by frost, the Box must be the chief in the great shade border.

I see so many wonderful Autumn themes in the Shade Garden.

The warm Autumn colours make me feel good.

Under the Corylus avellana is a little Rock Garden with half shady plants.

The Catalpa is the most important tree in the garden. In Summer it always smells fantastic.

I could show you many more photos from this section of the garden, but there's something else.

And of course, where such a charming Lady is, we know, who is really the chief here.

Begonias are growing very well in the baskets.

Near the pergola are lovely details to see.

And suddenly it is warm and sunny. Surprise! Surprise!

It is as though we had gone back to summer.

Here is the most sunny part, the heart of the garden. It requires the most time to work.

All over in the borders you can find perennial herbs, bushes, annual flowers, bulbs, grasses and a lot of roses, like a rainbow!

The Rose Garden looks very different than the Water Garden and the Shade Garden.
Here are many differences in appearence during the garden year.

Very often it looks like a colourful, cheerful Cottage Garden.

But very often, it's more a Rose Garden.

If we look back, we see, it's really October. Don't you think, that my friends have a fascinating garden with a lot of different facettes?
