This was my first time in America! Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic was our place to stay for two weeks. The wonderful things I saw there I will try to show you in some posts.
Santo Domingo first was built 1496 at the east side of the river. Later in 1502 it was built new at the west side of the River Ozama. I was very impresioned by the old houses of this time but more of the nature which I found very often in the town.
One of the first points I visited was the cave "Tres Ojos", "Three Eyes" Altogether I saw three different caves. This one was very beautiful with four blue lakes and a wonderful nature around.
This cave is directly in Santo Domingo. If you see the lakes between the stalactite cave and the exotic trees and shrubs you can really forget this reality.
The name of the first lake is "Lago de Azufre" (sulphur) but don't worry the air here is fresh. The pink pieces at the foto are turtles and there are also fishes whith a wonderful blue colour.

The atmospheric humidity is very high with 95 %. Here is a really good place to dream.
Sometimes the trees are growing directly at the stony soil. The window to the sky is mostly a little open!
The porous grey stones and the green plants are a wonderful perspective together with the blue and turquois lakes.
Only 2 m deep is the second lake. In earlier times this lakes were not under the earth 's surface so the ladies of the capital taked this lake for a swimming baths. Today it's name is "Lago de las Damas" what means, "Lake of the Ladies".
The sun is like a sky mirror in the lake.
In the darkest part of the cave we founded the third lake.
With the help of the little manual ferry we arrived the other side of the "La Nevera" what means "refrigerator". This third lake is with 20 Grad a little colder than the other three lakes.
We went through stalaktites stalakmites lianas and flying bats to the little light in front of us.
What can I say? I thought to arrived the paradise. Isn 't it? The most beautiful and biggest lake is "Los Zaramaguyones". This is the name of the species duck which is living in this lake. The name of the cave was older than the time when this lake was recovered.
It 's time to retrace one' steps! I 'll never forget this picture and I'll always remind me at the lake, the plants, the birds, the fishes and the beautiful yellow butterfly which is dancing in the blue sky.
Once again we are going by the ferry over the "La Nevera".
We walked through the garden around the cave to find a piece of the wonderful lake. I saw a lot of animals which I knowned only from the zoo and also a lot of plants which I knowned normally of the Botanical Gardens in Europe. In some trees I found a big formicary.
I was fascinated of the Sanseveria plant growing under and between the trees in the Domincan jungle.
Suddenly the green coulisse was open. Now I saw very clear that "Los Zaramaguyones" is the crater lake which has its seeds in vulcanic.
Slowly I got a feeling for the little details. Hummingbirds butterflies dragonflies waterbirds and little rapid lizards are living at this place.
In December I couldn't see a lot of plants flowering.
The Dominicans say:
If nothing is in bloom - that's CHRISTMAS.
