White, the colour which isn' t a colour at all in reality: we have been fascinated by white for a very long time. For instance, white is the colour of sunlight!!!
For thousends of years we have been using white for our symbols. The white lily with Madonna, the white doves of peace, the 'White Rose' (name of a resistance group in the Third Reich), all symbolize virginity, innocence, purity and the peace. The white peacock in the picture is living on the Isola Bella in Lago Maggiore. He and the white unicorn - as symbols of purity - are the heraldic animals of the famous, noble, Italian family there.
White can be found in many places; here are the hydrangeas in an 'Art and Crafts' Garden in the North of France.
Famous English gardeners like Penelope Hobhouse, often have done everything in white. Here white roses between grey and white copse and perennial herbs in Tintinhull.
Not many people could celebrate a 'White Christmas' this year. But it is possible for a lot of us to have a little white part in our gardens!! At the beginning I wrote that white is the colour of sunlight. Unfortunately, we can' t have sunlight every day, but with the white flowers we can catch a little light in our gardens. And this is my wish for you all in the next garden year 2008 "Light and Health"!
