The Scottish Captain McEachern bought a part of land around Lago Maggiore and began to built a garden in the style of a forest garden in 1930.
In the Gardens of Taranto Scotland meets Italy!!! McEachern carried out the Scottish custom of planting a tree, when an important visitor comes. And he came with a lot of Rhododendrons from Scotland and it looks for the most part like a Scottish landscape park.
The fountain of the putti and the Terrace Gardens are built in the formal Italian style. The contrast to the natural forest garden is very attractive. The second attraction is the unbelievable great variety of trees, shrubs, perennial herbs and bulbs.
A very interesting detail is the fact that more than 90% of the 20 000 different plant species had never before were grown in Italy!
The Gardens have a very good structure and they don' t look like a boring collection of rare plants. It' s full of harmony but also of interesting contrasts; there are little, personal corners as well as spacious greens and groves.
I saw the garden in the springtime with 80 000 tulips and violas wittrockianas. In Summer when the Canna indica bloom together with the Begonias, the colours are more intense. It is a question of taste if you like this garden or not, but I think 80 000 tulips are always impressive.
If my visit here were one month late, I would now go with you to the long twin border. I prefer the more natural way of planting, with which McEachern show the English way of gardening to the Italians.
I think here is the best of view in the Terrace Gardens.
It is wonderful to walk in the 40 ha with the special Botany.
