Do you want to meet the whole botanical world at the Canary Islands?
We are back in the garden of my brother www.ferienfincas.de and I asked the very old tortoise (Opuntia) why and how long she has been here. She 's told me a lot about herself and the sailors and ships, and about all the exotic plants I saw in Tenerife.
When the European people, first Spanish and Portuguese sailors began to colonize the Canaries, these Islands became more and more strategically important. This is the town hall of Icod de los Vinos (Tenerife) in the typically colonial style. I love the woodcarving balconies.
Since Tenerife were the last stop to provide the ships with fresh water and food before going to Africa, Asia and most of all America, this island received more and more impressive plants from the other continents when the ships returned. These plants love the ideal climate of this island.
The plant world of the Canary Island is now mixed with the plant world of other continents.
The bananas, tomatos and potatos are an important export hit of the Canary Islands.
The most impressioned thing for me is the great variety of the exotic plants here! In the 18 th century people built a greenhouse in La Orotava (Tenerife) to cultivate the new plants. Tenerife is really a flower queen with endemic and exotic plants.
Please, follow me in the botanical garden of Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife), where we can see a lot of the plants I told you. I hope you enjoy the walk.
Are you feeling to warm? We can go in the "Loro Parque" and visit the little penguin and all his friends. Yes, Tenerife is an island with a lot of surprices!! I 'm sure I will visit my brother in this year again.
